The garden reflected the culture of Cleveland’s Croatians, Serbians, and Slovenians. They had conflicted pasts and this garden symbolized peace between the groups.

Description:

Event center located in the heart of multicultural communities and ethnic enclaves of downtown San Francisco, California. The building serves as a venue space for the expression of Filipinos in the Bay area as well the preservation and advocacy of their arts and culture; social justice and economic equality; and history.

Just down the "Red Block" from the International Hotel Manilatown Center stood the original international hotel (I-Hotel), which provided many Filipinos—one of lowest on the socioeconomic ladder for Asian Americans—with affordable housing in an expensive urban environment. New development projects in the community after the 1960s threatened the current residents with eviction from an establishment which protected the rights and cultures of not only Filipinos but other minority populations in the United States. Despite clashes among law enforcement, tenant activists, and community protesters, eviction of the original I-Hotel was forced upon the residents, many of which were elderly occupants, in the early morning of August 04, 1977.

The construction of a new international hotel (I-Hotel) in 2003 reminded the predominantly Filipino population of this ethnic enclave about the housing conflicts that occurred in downtown San Francisco back in the late 1970s. Today, the current I-Hotel's community center memorializes the original I-Hotel from its art galleries and cultural events while continuing to honor the tradition of providing affordable housing to both the underprivileged and marginalized groups of San Francisco's Manilatown.

Physical Aspects:

This multi-storied apartment complex has a ground floor community center and a building facade matching the color scheme of San Francisco's Kearny street. The first five floors are primarily composed of tan bricks, likely paying tribute to the original I-Hotel, especially with the preservation of blank wall to display vibrant street art. The remaining nine floors follow contemporary architecture practices in being composed of whiter concrete with intervals of modern glass windows for residents to enjoy the San Francisco skyline.

Armenian Heritage Park

Description:

This memorial park celebrates Armenian immigrants in the United States, and the cultural and economic contributions they made to American society. It also contains a sculpture dedication for those impacted by the 1915-1923 Armenian Genocide.

This park features an abstract sculpture, in the shape of a split dodecahedron, sitting on a reflective pool. The reflecting pool is inscribed with the dedication. It has many different configurations, which represents the dispersion and subsequent union of immigrants from around the world. It was dedicated to victims of the Armenian Genocide in 1915-1923. The park also features a grass labyrinth.

Indian Cultural Gardens

This memorial, located in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, celebrates the rich history and culture of India, and honor the significant Indian community in Cleveland. It memorializes Mahatma Gandhi, important contributions of Indian culture, and impactful leaders in Indian history.

This garden features a ten-foot tall bronze sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi. The base of the sculpture is inscribed with the Gandhi quote: “I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” It also has 6 granite pillars, each representing a different core tradition of Indian culture. The 6 pillars include: Universal Brotherhood, Legacy, Artistic Traditions, Leadership, Modern India, and Connections. Each pillar also includes names of important figures within each of the topics. The walkway also features inscriptions of “welcome” in English and the 15 major languages of India.

Lithuanian Garden

This memorial is dedicated to Lithuanian culture. It celebrates several historical figures revered as heroes due to their role in the independence of Lithuania, as well as those remembered fondly for their contributions to shaping Lithuanian culture.

The garden is lyre-shaped and divided into the three levels, the highest of which features a balustrade. It features a fountain dedicated to Birutè, the Grand Dutchess of Lithuania whose son, Grand Duke Vytautas the Great, is revered as a national hero. Dr. Vincas Kudirka and Maironis have busts within the garden that commemorate their contributions to the nation's revival. Dr. Jonas Basanavičius, “Patriarch of the Nation”, has his cultural contributions commemorated by a bust, as well. There are two trident-shaped pillars present within the garden, the Pillars of Gediminas, that celebrate Gediminas' founding of the capital and the long rule of his dynasty. The lowest level ends in two staircases seperated by plants.

Italian Cultural Garden

Description:

Renaissance Fountain

The Renaissance fountain located in the center of the garden in the upper level. It was modeled to resemble the fountain in the Villa Medici in Rome, Italy.

Roman poet Virgil

The bronze bust of Virgil is also located in the upper level of the gardens. Virgil was an ancient roman poet who composed the "Aeneid".

The garden was dedicated as "a symbol of the contribution of Italian culture to American democracy". It was designed to resemble the finer things of the Italian culture; seen through the extensive walkways, balustrades, benches, and two large winding staircases leading from the upper level to the ampitheater.

Within the garden there are large stair cases, an amphitheater which attracts large crowds, beautiful statues of famous Italians, and water fountains throughout.
