Description:

This monument is by Irish sculptor John Behan, and is a symbol of the positive impacts of Irish immigration in both the United States and beyond. It was a gift from Ireland to the United Nations.

This monument shows various immigrants disembarking off of a ship, much like many Irish did at Ellis Island, not too far from the UN building. The ship is packed full of people, looking towards America and towards a new life.

The Boston Irish Famine Memorial commemorates the 37,000 Irish refugees who arrived at Boston in 1847 alone. Large Irish communities traveled to Boston and other parts of the United States to escape the Great Hunger and Ireland's impoverished state.

Physical Aspects:

Located at Downtown Boston near the Freedom Trail, corner of Washington and School Streets; eight separate monuments engraved with information on the Irish Famine; monuments depict families and people in pain and hunger.
