Description:

Johann Michael Jahn. Johann Michael Jahn (1816-1883) came to New Braunfels in 1845 as a colonist with the German Emigration Company. He married Anna Klein Bellmer in 1850. A "Tischlermeister" or master craftsman, Jahn established a business making fine hand-crafted furniture. Active in civic affairs, he was elected one of the first alderman of the city. After Jahn's death, his son and grandson operated the business, and built this building in 1910. The company continued until the 1930s. Jahn's works have been displayed locally and at the Witte Museum in San Antonio.

The Conestee Lost Settlement Marker

Description:

Dedicated to a lost settlement of the Cherokee tribe. The former Conestee town, or also referred to as Kana’sta, was believed to have been abandoned between the 1750-1770's. Cherokee legend says these people were invited to a secret, flourishing village located within the mountains and they alone of all the Cherokee Nation escaped the long wars and suffering that followed the settlers' invasion of the mountains.

The Irish Famine

Description:

There are two sculptures facing each other, but from a distance. On one side there is a sculpture of a man sitting down and a woman on her knees. They are both extremely skinny and have on inadequate clothing. There is also an empty bowl sitting right beside them. The man doesn't have a shirt on and both figures look overall very rough. The woman is also on her knees with her hand in the air giving the impression that she is praying. On the opposite sculpture there is a man, a woman, and a child. All three are dressed very well and look very fit. Unlike the other sculpture, all three are walking. This contrasts depicts the struggling, anxious immigrant transforming to a new life in America with opportunity and freedom. This memorial is visited by over 3 million people per year.

This memorial reflects on Ireland during the potato famine. It shows one family that is impoverished and greatly suffering while another family is thriving because of new opportunities found in America. Some say the memorial honors Irish-Americans as they have found a way to prosper, but there are also critics that say the memorial mocks the famine itself and Irish people affected.

Physical Aspects:

On one side there is a wealthy family dressed in proper clothing. They look healthy and able bodied. The family consists of a man, woman, and child. On the other side there is a man and a woman. They are very impoverished as they lack proper clothing. They also lack food as there is an empty plate next to them.

Slovenian Garden

The garden reflected the culture of Cleveland’s Croatians, Serbians, and Slovenians. They had conflicted pasts and this garden symbolized peace between the groups.

Historical Subject:

Montreal has a large Greek community, once based in the area of Montreal where the statue was set to be placed. A Hellenic sculptor, Giorgos Houliaras, created the sculpture free of charge. Money to place it was raised from three organizations enthusiastic to leave a permanent imprint of Hellenism on the city. The statue was unveiled to the city in the presence of Montreal's mayor on its 375th anniversary since its founding.

This statue depicts a traditional Greek family of a father, mother, and child arriving in the New World and looking outward at what Canada has to offer them. They have "Hellas," Greek for Greece, emblazoned on their suitcases as a symbol of their homeland.
