Flannery O'Connor is counted as one of the great American writers. The Southern gothic writer gained prestige after attending the Iowa Writer’s Workshop. At age 26, she was diagnosed with lupus and settled on her mother's farm, where she kept peacocks and wrote two novels and over a dozen short stories before her death at age 39 in 1964.

Physical Aspects:

This four story townhouse in the Lafayette District in Savannah is built in the Greek Revival style. The house, built from dark gray stone with overlaid brickwork, has a basement as well as three upper floors. Though the basement and upper two floors are currently used as apartments, the entry level floor has been restored in the Depression-era style of O'Connor's childhood - including two fireplaces and wood floors - and is accessible by the public. A small walled garden is attached to the back. The home also boasts the Bruckheimer Library, which contains rare editions of O'Connor's works. A bronze metal memorial plaque stands in front of the house.
