Dewey Monument
Memorial statue dedicated to Admiral George Dewey at the center of Union Square in San Francisco, California
Monument commemorates the American victory on 01 May 1898 by Admiral George Dewey in the Spanish-American War's Battle of Manila Bay. On 14 May 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt also dedicated the monument to the late President William McKinley, who Roosevelt succeeded after McKinley was assassinated during the monument's construction. Additionally, the monument acts as a tribute to the United States Navy and the sailors that serve in it.
2.7-meter tall, bronzed statue of Nike, or "Winged Victory," holding a trident (representing Admiral Dewey's naval victory) and a laurel wreath (representing President McKinley) atop a roughly 26-meter, ornate granite column with square base. Each face of the granite base is embedded with historical inscriptions regarding the history of the monument's dedications.
